I visited so many waterfalls in Iceland! From big tourist attractions to little side of the road trickles, waterfalls were everywhere. I thought that I would get bored seeing so many waterfalls, but each one was unique. I decided to save a whole post for the waterfalls, and turn it into a little pageant. They can’t exactly walk the runway, but I’ll give a little profile of each one, and then YOU will be the judge. Vote at the end of the post for your favorite.
Contestant #1: Skogafoss
Height: 60 meters (197 feet tall)
Weird Fact: This waterfall used to be on the Southern coast of Iceland, but the coast has receded about 3 miles!
What I did there: Climbed up the steps all the way to the top, counting along the way.
Contestant #2: Seljalandsfoss
Special Features: It’s possible to walk behind this waterfall and see it from the back!
Dangers: The path is slippery and wet. If you fall, the situation would probably be grim.
Bonus Feature: We arrived on a sunny day and got to see a rainbow.
Contestant #3: Detifoss
Claim to Fame: Biggest waterfall in Europe (in terms of volume of water rushing down per second)
Talent: Getting people totally soaked (especially when the weather is windy)
Contestant #4: Hraunfossar
English Name: Waterfall of Lava
Fun Fact: This waterfall comes from an underground, or subterranean, river! It flows out of a lava field rather than being fed from a normal river.
Contestant #5: Gulfoss
Nickname: The Golden Waterfall
The Latest Fashion: On the day I visited, Gulfoss was sporting a beautiful rainbow. This is common attire for her, because sunshine and rain mixing together create beautiful results every time!
Contestant #6: Asbyrgi Canyon
Claim to Fame: This waterfall is now dry!
Early Days: Scientists can tell that there used to be a big waterfall here back in prehistoric times. The water created this huge valley, but now it is close to totally dry.
Talent: This canyon can produce a big echo if you scream into it!
Contestant #7:Kolugjufur 
Special Talent: This waterfall has a bridge over it, so people can walk or drive right across!
Other Important Facts: None. This waterfall isn’t particularly famous, but it’s still nice.
Contestant #8: Goðafoss
English Name: Waterfall of the Gods
Early Days: Back in about the year 1000, Christianity became the official religion of Iceland. It’s said that one of the local leaders converted, and then threw his statues of the Norse Gods into the waterfall.

WOW! It took you 423 steps to get up there! About how tall was the waterfall that you climbed? How old are the waterfalls? My favorite was definitely the Gulfoss. It was so pretty with the rainbow. I recently just saw an upside-down rainbow in my neighborhood! There were also 2 more small ones with it. The best part is that it was right over my house!! Also there was once a rainbow that started in my friends backyard went over the house between us and ended in my BACKYARD!!!:) Hope your having fun in Iceland.:) 🙂
I saw a waterfall called Upper and Lower Falls in Yellowstone National Park this summer. It was similar to Skogafoss.
These waterfalls are beautiful! 🙂 I thought the Asbyrgi Canyon was really interesting, as it’s a prehistoric waterfall. Was it fun making an echo there?
Your visit to Dettifoss totally reminded me of the time I went to Niagra Falls. It was a while ago, so I don’t remember the details exactly… But my family and I got on a boat that went through the water area around the waterfall. At some point we must’ve gotten real close to the waterfall because we got soaked!!!! We were all given ponchos though. Afterwards, we climbed up from the land near the water to the top, where we could view the top of Niagra Falls. That was another really wet part, but it a lot fun!
Why is Gulfoss called the Golden Waterfall? Does it have to do with the rainbows?
I once went to Niagara Falls. It didn’t seem tall because it was so wide. I thought the Godafoss story was very interesting. By the way, my favorite waterfall was Asbyrgi Canyon.
I saw two rainbows when I went to Florida. The Gulfoss waterfall was so beautiful.

When you were at the Golden Water Fall and you saw a rainbow, was it raining there? Or was it just from all the mist that the waterfall created? That looks like a fun and interesting place to go.
I thought it was really interesting that the Hraunfossar Waterfall came from a subterranean river. I also thought that the Seljalandsfoss Waterfall looked really nice.
I loved all of the pretty waterfalls, the tallest water fall I’ve ever gone to was 4 feet high. 😉 You’re really lucky you are in Iceland, and get to see all of those water falls.
I really loved seeing the picture and videos of contestant 4, Hraunfossar (waterfall of Lava). Another waterfall I felt was different is contestant 8, Gooafoss (Waterfall Of The Gods.
The Godafoss reminded me of when I went to Niagra Falls.When we went we took the boat and we got soaked.
That sounds fun! It’s neat to be up close and personal with a waterfall, isn’t it? I haven’t been to Niagara Falls yet!
I’ve seen one waterfall before. If you go to Mills Falls in Meredith, New Hampshire, there is a waterfall near the Ben and Jerry’s. They created that waterfall to run the mill. Once the machines and mills were out, they made it into a tourist attraction. My family and I always go to a restaurant near the waterfall to have breakfast at the Waterfall Cafe. They call it the Waterfall Cafe because of the waterfall!
All of those waterfalls were so beautiful! I would love to see them someday.
The windy Water Fall was my favorite! Its funny how everyone got wet by just water and wind!
